Psychological first aid resources

November 2, 2011

The World Health Organization has just come out with some interesting new resources around psycho-social support in emergencies and mental health issues for emergency workers. Their new guide ‘Psychological First Aid: Guide for Field Workers’ covers how first responders can best offer social and psychological support as they provide humanitarian aid to people suffering from serious crisis events. It provides widely agreed upon psychological first aid materials for use in low and middle-income countries. It reflects the emerging science and international consensus on how to provide basic support to people in the immediate aftermath of extremely stressful events.

This guide is pretty good. I have a few copies of it, one printed and one on my kindle. It is really important to look at this before a deployment. Our team used this Post Haiti with our psychological first aid team. Most came back with easy reintegration. I guess the key that we found from that book is the importance of having a team to come back home with.

Great link, thanks for the post!

Btw Nick – Thank you for the good read. Just finished your book. One suggestions: I would work on the formatting, most of the info is available online so the digital paid version should be cleaned up for Kindles. Other than that, you really nailed it. Everything you said was spot on. Especially the comment about “what are you running from?” my first question to people was (if male) “So who’s the girl?” I found most men were running from a relationship or running to prove themselves for one.

I am ranting… all to say great work!
